Market 96, a cannabis dispensary, will celebrate the grand opening of its first downtown Chicago location on Saturday.
The social-equity dispensary has signed a 10-year lease to occupy 3,000 square feet at 529 S. Wells St. in the South Loop.
The opening follows the launch of its first Illinois location in September in Oswego, and the company is eyeing downstate next.
"Next locations being considered include Cairo, Belleville and two additional locations in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs,” said Fred Spencer, CEO of Market 96 and its parent company Blounts & Moore.
“Market 96 is more than just a dispensary,” he added. “Our goal is to create a place where guests can explore high-quality cannabis products while providing opportunities to those underrepresented in the cannabis industry.”
Market 96's new $1.2 million site will employ 25 people. The South Loop was chosen because of its “traffic count, access to public transportation, distance to the lake and Grant Park, and residential density,” Spencer said.
In addition to having six adult dispensary licenses in Illinois, Blounts & Moore also has two craft grow licenses, which allow it to cultivate, dry, cure and package cannabis products, and sell wholesale to other licensed cannabis businesses in Illinois, according to Founding Partner Sherri Blount.
The company also has a transport license that allows it to transport cannabis and cannabis-infused products to other cannabis businesses in Illinois.
